It's Time to Do It Again - New Year 2009
Are you glad 2008 is over? If you
were to describe what 2008 meant to your life,
what words would you use? Was it a year of
growth, maintenance, retreat or self-destructive
behavior? If you look at the four rooms of your
life: Business, Family, Social and Personal, how
would you rate each of these rooms? Growth,
maintenance, retreat or self-destructive
behavior? What would you consider your greatest
accomplishment in each of these rooms?
These are not just questions; they are a mental
and emotional review of your year. Too many
people don’t understand the need to sit and
review the year they have just added to their
personal history book. If you don’t review and
understand what was and what wasn’t, the
tendency is to repeat that year, rather than
improve on it. Each year should have a tag of
understanding to it.
Example:
2008 was the year I ________________.
2008 will be a year I remember as the year I
_____________.
The one thing I will take from 2008 where I
improved the most will be _________________.
The one thing I wanted to achieve in 2008 in
each of my rooms that I didn’t achieve was
__________________.
Reviewing the previous year allows you to have a
calmer presence as you move forward in your new
year. Without an honest review and understanding
of what 2008 meant to you, you will enter 2009
confused and dragging unresolved parts of last
year into your new beginning. When you
understand what 2008 was to your life, you will
be able to establish the direction you want your
new year to go.
Please realize the reason most people continue
the previous year in their new year is the lack
of review and understanding. What you will
accomplish in 2009 will mostly be controlled by
what you understand from 2008. If you don’t
bring to 2009 a clear understanding of what was
and wasn’t achieved in 2008, you will be unclear
about how to start 2009.
As you start your journey through 2009, here are
some guidelines to use to design the meaning of
this new gift of time.
#1: Design in your mind what you want to be able
to say about 2009 on December 31, 2009.
Remember, begin with the end in mind. When you
plan a journey you need to know where you are
going. It is not important you know each and
every turn, but that you know where you want the
completion point to be.
#2: Draw from 2008 the top three lessons you
learned in each of your four rooms. Remember,
lessons are the insights you implemented to
create an improved behavior. Too many people
stare at what went wrong with the previous year,
rather than what went right. Right is always
more powerful than wrong. The greater your
emphasis on your lessons the easier it is to
improve on them.
#3: Don’t hit the ground running; walk into your
new year with a manageable pace. Remember,
clarity demands a pace you can manage. Running
into the New Year will GUARANTEE you will start
the New Year with confusion. Start with
confusion and watch how challenging it is to
slow down and find the clarity.
#4: Sketch a dream; don’t just write goals.
Remember, goals without a mental sketch of what
you are working to achieve, leaves you unable to
understand how to connect events to your life. A
dream is the sketch your imagination uses to
connect events to the journey. Goals become the
defined pathways between the sketch and the
achievement. Goals are not simply statements you
write and then seek to connect. They are the
next step after the sketch is drawn.
#5: Surround yourself with others who are
supporters of your journey. Remember, when the
challenges set in, you need a fan club around
your life to cheer you on with presence and
understandings. No matter how strong you are,
there will be moments of doubt that will attack
your desire. When those moments occur, you need
to be able to reach out and feel the mental and
emotional hugs of those who believe in you.
#6: Before you say “yes” to anything pass it
through the question that determines either
confusion or clarity. Remember the question,
will this feed my confusion or strengthen my
clarity? This is more than simply a question to
ask; it is a question of impact. Every decision
you make creates a pathway for you to travel.
The greater your clarity, the simpler and less
stressful your life becomes.
Well, here you are. You are standing in a time
of “Newness” or “Sameness.” The pathway is your
choice and you will make that choice. How do you
know which you have chosen? Study your behavior.
